One of the giants of science fiction. and one of the great minds of the 20th Century, Isaac Asimov was born on this day in 1920. His work and the work of other great sci-fi writers, film makers and game developers is celebrated on this day, unofficially known as “International Science Fiction Day.” Here in your School Library we are going to be celebrating Sci-Fi all month long– so stay posted, and visit us in person, to find out more.
Legendary American writer Ursula K. Le Guin was born on this day in 1929. Le Guin is celebrated as a master of fantasy and science fiction. She is best known for her novel A Wizard of Earthsea, published in 1968, and numerous follow-up books set in the world of Earthsea. Le Guin died in 2018.
Frank Herbert, author of the Science Fiction classic novel Dune, and the series of Dune books, was born on this day in 1920.
The first episode of “Doctor Who” aired on the BBC on this day in 1963. It has since become the longest running Sci-Fi television series ever. Doctor Who has grown from earning a small cult following in the UK to become a worldwide phenomenon. Come down to the School Library to check some of our Doctor Who titles.

Writer Jo Walton was born on this day in Wales in 1964. She is the author of many different award winning fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction books. Her novel Farthing, set in a Britain that has descended into the horrors of fascism, is the first book in an alternative history series that includes Ha’penny and Half a Crown. Walton has lived in Canada for more than a decade.
Two Science Fiction Masters were born on this day. Arthur C. Clarke, the author of such great books as the landmark novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, was born in 1917 . Philip K. Dick was born on this day in 1928. He is the author of numerous Sci-Fi cult favourites, including The Man in the High Castle, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (which was adapted for the screen as “Blade Runner.”)
