District Online Resources

Students, you are missing out if you are not making use of our district sponsored online resources. Check out the wide variety of excellent resources that are available to you, free of charge, if you are a Surrey Schools student.  Note that if you are attempting to gain access from a school computer or tablet, you will be able to get in directly. However, from home you will need a username and password. See us at the School Library for that information.

Welcome to the Second Semester

What?

We know that the break between semesters was too short but we welcome you back for Semester Two of the 2013-2014 School Year!  As always, we extend our invitation to you to make use of all that the school library program has to offer you, whether online or live and in person.  We look forward to seeing you and helping you as a student and as a lifelong learner!

Christmas Reading Rewards!

Reading is its own reward. But from time to time we like to give a little something more to those students who demonstrate a love of reading to the rest of the class during SSR. Teachers select students for Reading Rewards tickets, which earn them trips to the school library during class for warm beverages, some tasty treats, and some bonus silent reading in a warm, comfortable and festive atmosphere!

Andrew Carnegie

On this day in 1835, Andrew Carnegie was born. He would go on to become the “richest man in the world.” A controversial figure, many criticize the manner in which he amassed his wealth. However, he is also one of the most prolific philanthropists in history, having given away more than $350 million in his lifetime. He is best known for the establishment of more than 2500 public libraries throughout the world. The millions he gave away in his lifetime continues to do good work right up to the present, accounting for billions of dollars of philanthropy.

Take Your Kids to Work Day

IMG_0021[1]

Thanks to all the kids who came to work in the library on “Take Your Kids to Work Day.” While most of them will spend the rest of their lives remembering this great day, and will yearn for another chance, sadly most of them will never work in a library again. Cherish the memories!

One of these kids belongs to the Teacher Librarian. The others just wanted to be here because whatever their parents do clearly pales in comparison to the mighty work of the Teacher Librarian! Not to mention the chance to spend a day with Buck the Library Duck.

The happy news is that students at LTS can join the Library Team for the chance to volunteer in the school library on a regular shift! Check out our library team page and fill out our online application.

Not Just a Place…

teacherlibrarianOn School Library Day, it is important to remember that the School Library is not just a place. More importantly, it is the people who are a part of the School Library who give it life. Everyone who works in the school library, in the physical space, or online, contributes to the vital role of the school library in education.

Thanks to Mia MacMeekin for this wonderful infographic on the role of the Teacher Librarian (left).  Every school needs a Teacher Librarian working with the students, staff, administration, parents and other stakeholders in the success of a school library program. Without a Teacher Librarian, a school library is just another room after all.
