King Kong Bundy

Back in the day, when I was a kid in Grade 8, all the boys were fans of pro wrestling.  And as much as we had the good guys to cheer for, it was more about the bad guys to cheer against.  Big John Studd, the Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkov, Paul Orndorff, Greg “the Hammer” Valentine– these were some of the bad guys. Then there was King Kong Bundy.  There were plenty of ugly you-know-whats in pro wrestling. Billed at 6 foot 4 and 460 pounds, he had to be the biggest, ugliest so-and-so you loved to hate. Born on this day in 1957 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Chris Pallies grew up to become the world famous King Kong Bundy.

Note: Pro Wrestling was never again as good as it was in the early 80’s.  Did it go downhill that much? Or did we just grow up? I hope it was more of the latter!

Seeing in Technicolour

The first of in what we hope is a series of free lunch time concerts on the new school library stage went today and it was a big success!  Thanks to “Seeing in Technicolour,” a band of Lord Tweedsmuir senior students, who put on a great show.

A small but enthusiastic crowd of students was on hand to enjoy the music. We hope that word can spread that we can pack in even more people for our next show.

If you are a performer, either in a band or a solo act, we would love to give you the chance to perform on our stage in a future event!

Take Your Kids to Work Day

Thanks to all the kids who came to work in the library on “Take Your Kids to Work Day.” While most of them will spend the rest of their lives remembering this great day, and will yearn for another chance, sadly most of them will never work in a library again. Cherish the memories!

One of these kids belongs to the Teacher Librarian. The others just wanted to be here because whatever their parents do clearly pales in comparison to the mighty work of the Teacher Librarian! Not to mention the chance to spend a day with Buck the Library Duck.

Bring your lunch but leave your worries behind. The John Buchan Library / Uncommon Learning Commons / Panther Den / Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School Library / The Most Awesome Place on Earth is pleased to offer a lunch-time acoustic performance on our brand new stage! Be sure to be there so you can tell your friends that you were at the very first “Library Unplugged” session!

On This Day in Games History: Elizabeth Magie & Monopoly

One of the world’s most popular board games, Monopoly, has a controversial and confusing history.  While Charles Darrow receives most of the fame for developing the game, in fact many sources contributed to create Monopoly. The person who most deserved a better fate was Elizabeth Magie. Her game, “The Landlord’s Game,” is the earliest known version of the game that we now know as Monopoly. On this day in 1935, Parker Brothers acquired the patent from Magie for $500.  Monopoly would go on to generate millions, and Magie’s contribution would be ignored for many decades. Only in recent years has the full story started to emerge.

Veterans’ Week November 5-11

From Veterans Affairs Canada:

Each year, from November 5 to 11, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events will take place across the country to commemorate Veterans’ week. These are opportunities for all Canadians to recognize the contribution our Veterans have made and to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of Canada.

There are so many ways to remember and honour our Veterans:

  • Wear a poppy.
  • Attend your local Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11th.
  • Thank a Veteran by sending a postcard for peace.
  • Teachers – order some of our free learning materials and use our Teacher’s Guide to lead your classroom on a remembrance journey.
  • Students – read one of our remembrance newspapers written just for Grade 7 and above.
  • Talk to a friend or relative who served with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan or in other areas of conflict.
  • View our Heroes Remember videos and listen to Veterans talk about their experiences.
  • Plant your own Garden of Remembrance.
  • Visit the remembrance challenge page where you will find videos and images you can use to create a mashup, build a virtual scrapbook, a fan site or just decorate your own Web space. Share what you build with others and link back to our site.

However you choose to remember Canada’s Veterans, be sure to share it with everyone you know. Together, it is our duty to pass on our gratitude and keep their legacy and memories alive. This Veterans’ Week, show you remember.

Diwali

Diwali is celebrated by millions of people in India, Canada and around the world. Hundreds of millions of Hindus celebrate “the Festival of Lights.” People of other faiths, including Sikhism, also celebrate. Rugby

Planning is already underway for the 2014 rugby season at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School. In particular, the Junior Boys team is asking any Grade 9 or Grade 10 boys interested in playing rugby for the school this year to SIGN UP (click on the link to go to our online sign up page.)  You can also check out the Panther Rugby page for information about all the teams at our school.  Check back often as more information gets posted as we get closer to the spring season.
